Central Air Conditioner Filters - Remember To Change Yours!

Central air conditioner filters go hand-in-hand with healthier air for you and your family. If you do not change your filter on a regular basis, the air you breathe will become unfiltered or dirty. Yes, the same thing can happen with window units; however, central air units force air flow through your entire house, and the air is recycled through the unit, whereas a window unit simply pushes air into your house. There is no recycling or cleaning of the air, unlike with a central air unit.

Having said this, it is important to monitor and change your filters. Central air conditioner filters are not difficult to change. Ideally, your landlord or the previous owner of your house should have showed you how to change the filter, along with sharing the size of filter you need. If homeowners and builders do not pass on this information to new owners and tenants, this is not only a potential health risk, but it can also result in your entire system breaking down. Maintenance is a must to ensure the proper functioning of your unit.

Remembering when to change you central air conditioner filter can be a challenge with the busy lives many people lead. There are however many different tricks to remembering. Use a calendar or task manager, or other tools like ‘Remember the Milk’, writing dates on the filters, putting a calendar on the unit itself, when you pay a certain bill, always on the first or fifteenth, etc. You need to find what is best for you. If you have a fairly good memory, it might be simply writing the date on the filter that is currently in the unit, and then checking it around that time. This works for some people. The majority of homeowners however, have to use some sort of reminder system.

In addition to making sure you change your central air conditioner filters, there are other maintenance steps you will want to take. One of the most important is having your unit serviced twice a year; once when you first start using the heat and the other when you begin to use the air. If, for some reason, you do not really use one or the other, have the unit checked in the spring and then again in the fall. This will help to ensure that your unit is working properly and will prevent any unpleasant surprises down the road.

You will also want to make sure that you clean the unit itself. Look at you manual to see, and understand, the best way to do this for your particular unit. If you do not have the manual, contact the manufacturer and see if you obtain this information from them. Normally, it is as easy as turning it off, opening it up and spraying it down.

Having central air conditioning can be very advantageous and by maintaining it properly and changing the central air conditioner filters regularly, they are worth the additional investment at the outset.
