Which Is The Best Dehumidifier?Choosing the best dehumidifier can be a bit overwhelming, but knowing which features to look for in a dehumidifier can make the decision much easier. Part of knowing which features are most desirable in a dehumidifier is knowing what to expect from such an appliance.
To dehumidify an entire house, you would need a larger unit designed to handle a whole house. Read the specifications of each model you are considering buying to make sure that you are getting a dehumidifier that is large enough for the space you have in mind. For small enclosed spaces such as closets and cabinets, all you need is a mini-dehumidifier such as the Eva-Dry mini-dehumidifier, a compact little unit that uses no electricity to remove moisture from the air. Instead of electricity, the Eva-Dry mini absorbs moisture into silica crystals, which change color when it is time to dry them out. To dry out the silica crystals, simply plug the unit into a wall socket, then it will be all ready to go again. This mini dehumidifier is ideal for closets and other small spaces, but might not be sufficient to handle larger rooms such as bathrooms or laundry rooms. For these rooms, you may need to use a slightly larger unit. Smaller capacity dehumidifiers like the ones made by Danby and Soleus are suitable for single rooms, basements or crawl spaces, but the largest of these units is only effective up to 1000 square feet, which might be large enough for an apartment, but isn’t the best dehumidifier to use for an entire house. The Soleus CFM 40-E has a 40 pint capacity, which means that it is capable of removing up to 40 pints of moisture from the air in a single day, but keep in mind that the 12.5 pint collection cup will need to be emptied 2 or 3 times throughout this process. For larger rooms, one of the larger Danby units may be needed, but these too are only effective up to 1000 square feet. For a whole house dehumidifier, you will need to look to something a little larger such as the dehumidifiers made by Aprilaire. Aprilaire has two different types of whole house dehumidifiers, one designed for ducted climate control systems and another stand alone model for non-ducted use. The beauty of Aprilaire’s ducted systems is that they are fully automated and able to electronically sense the climate and adjust the unit accordingly so that it only runs when needed. This unit is capable of removing 135 pints of water from the air, and there are no tanks to empty clean. An Aprilaire unit may be the best dehumidifier you will find if you are looking for a fully automated, low maintenance whole house dehumidifier.
